Suhaila was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2002 and the Brunei Bar in August 2010. Her background is in corporate banking & finance practice (both conventional and Islamic). Prior to joining the Firm in October 2010, Suhaila was attached to the Islamic Finance Unit of Skrine, a Kuala Lumpur based legal firm, where her practice focused on Islamic banking & finance and Islamic capital market in Malaysia.

Suhaila’s experience include:

  • Acting as counsel to AmInvestment Bank Berhad on its Islamic venture capital and Islamic venture capital management programme undertaken by a company under Johor Corporation (JCorp), a state owned entity.
  • Acting as counsel to Saturna Capital Corporation (an American shariah fund management company), on its acquisition of a Malaysian fund management company and in the conversion of the conventional fund management company to Islamic fund management company.
  • Acting as counsel to ING Insurance Berhad in a purchase of debt (bay dayn) transaction in the amount of RM200 million from AmInvestment Bank Berhad.
  • Acting as counsel to Affin Islamic Bank Berhad in its Musharakah programme between the Bank and its customers in land developments.
  • Drafting Islamic financing documentation under the principles of            Bai Bithaman Ajil, Bai Inah, Ijarah, Istisna’, Murabahah and Qardhul Hassan for various Malaysian banks including HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad, Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad, AmIslamic Bank Berhad, OCBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and Standard Chartered Bank Berhad.
  • Advising and drafting legal documentation for AmInvestment Bank Berhad in its Islamic stockbroking undertaking.
  • Advised and acted for an investor in the subscription of RM415 million Sukuk Mudharabah and RM330 million Sukuk Ijarah issuance by Projek Lintasan Shah Alam Sdn Bhd.
  • Assisted as counsel in the shares subscription exercise by Australian and New Zealand Bank in AmBank (M) Berhad.
  • Assisted as counsel in the RM160 million Sukuk Ijarah issuance by Ingress Sukuk Berhad.
